Social media is in an odd place. For the past decade, Twitter has positioned itself as a town square of discussion — a place anyone on the internet can go to have worthwhile conversations. Over time, that has been far more complex, and it’s easier said than done. The site is overrun with bots and trolls. There is plenty of engagement bait from right-wing extremists. Under billionaire Elon Musk, Twitter (or X, if you prefer) rewards users for posting disinformation, clickbait, and anything else that will garner an immediate reaction.

Last week, United States presidential candidate Donald Trump met with Musk on an X livestream, which could have gone better to put it mildly.

The session did not begin for more than 40 minutes after its scheduled start time. Once the meeting began, Musk apologized and blamed a “massive attack” that overwhelmed the system. Trump supporters were visibly frustrated, lashing out on the platform.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck said he “planned his entire day around this.” Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman posted, “please let Elon know we can’t join.”

Some have pointed out that Musk, after purchasing the platform in 2023, axed more than 80 percent of staff and argued this may have gone better had…
