Ford Has the Most Electric Vehicle Momentum, But It Is Still Lightyears Behind Tesla

Will Ford make it through to electric-autonomy?

Since Tesla debuted its Roadster in 2008, it has been the king of electric vehicles. There’s not much to compromise on, either. Every Tesla seems to beat out its competition in regards to range, networks of chargers, safety, and any other metric electric fanatics can use to contrast their options.

Other electric and hybrid manufacturers have derived a notion that green vehicles need a “green” design, which often turns ugly. The Nissan Leaf is one of the most prominent examples of this trend.

Ford seems to be taking the right approach. Their Mustang Mach-E is one of the nicest electric cars, right behind Tesla’s Model S refresh and Porsche’s Taycan Turbo. By contrast, GM’s competitor — the Chevrolet Bolt — is ugly and hard to argue if it’s worth the $39,000.

Ford’s decision to unveil the Ford F-150 Lightning as their second go-round in electric is interesting. After all, the F-150 is Ford’s best-selling vehicle and has been the best-selling car in the United States for decades. Ford has made $42 billion from its F-series pickups, by far its most reliable revenue source.
