Google may have finally nailed TV streaming
There hasn’t been an Apple TV competitor in the way of streaming hubs, but Google may officially have one.
This week, it was announced that Google was done making Chromecasts. At first, news of this was somewhat alarming considering how much Google has done in the streaming space. Its Android/Google TV was a considerable challenger to the Apple TV, which is the best streaming option on the market if you disregard a luxury price point.
The problem for Chromecast is that it never really had a standalone interface. Compared to Roku or Amazon, this was a harder sell. Chromecast became less popular over time.
Upon the news of Google ending Chromecast, the company announced its successor: Google TV. It could finally be a real 4K challenger to Apple TV.
At $99.99, you get a new set-top box that offers substantially better performance than Chromecast. It even adds some useful new features, such as remote finder — one of my favorite new additions to Apple TV.
The only real separator between what Google folks may be used to on Chromecast and this new Google TV is that you’ll need to provide your own HDMI cable, as this isn’t just a dongle.
